Synopsis
A ghost, a witch and a troll are proud of being unpleasant, and each wants to outdo the others. When a girl arrives at a cottage nearby, they see a chance to settle their argument: surely frightening the new neighbour will prove which of them is the most fearsome. Their target is much less easily intimidated than they expect. As the three attempt to scare her, their competition becomes a succession of comic failures. Julia Donaldson's rhyming story and Axel Scheffler's detailed pictures turn would-be monsters into slapstick characters, while the girl shows that bravery has little to do with being the biggest person in the encounter.
